What is autoruns supposed to do?

My problem is that for running Condor, I would like to be running as few processes as possible.  On the other hand, my csic web development project requires a great deal of resources.  I would like to be able to switch back and forth between my two profiles as easily as possible.  MSConfig doesn’t do the job.  Autoruns sounds like it should.  You can save a profile to a file and you can open it.  However, if I open a saved profile, the changes appear in the GUI interface but once I exit, the changes disappear.  Is this how it is supposed to behave?  Surely that can’t be!

Patron Update – segmentation fault using kdevelop

I’m having a problem with segmentation faults using the kdevelop integrated development environment while altering uvm_patroncmp.c  This is the program that compares patron records in an “old” file to a “newer” file and decides whether a record should be added, changed or expired.  Changed and added records are written to a transaction file and expired records are written to an expiration file.

I need to modify this file so that the new and old records are compared on the institution id field instead of the ssan field.  I tried just substituting all of the applicable occurences of ssan with institution_id which seems like it should work because the size of the field is specified with the sizeof key word in the comparison clause like the following:

if (memcmp(new_sif.ssan, old_sif.ssan, sizeof old_sif.ssan) > 0)

When I did this and compiled it, the result was a segmentation fault. Now I’ve reverted to the original file and I’m still getting a segmentation fault!

OK.  More information.  The scripts and programs for updating patron records is on a 64 bit linux machine.  I have been using my 32 bit test machine to modify the c program and that is where I’ve had the segmentation faults.  I recently made the ssan to institution_id substitution on the host 64 bit server without any problems.  I don’t think there is anything in the source code that is forcing it to be compiled as 64 bit.  I still don’t know what is going on.

Virtual Desktops – from an email to Woody

Have you ever tried virtual desktops?  They have been a standard feature of Unix desktops for many years.  Basically, you can switch between desktops so that, if you have a lot of open windows but want to segregate your activities, you can do that be devoting certain activities to certain desktops.  The simplest such application is part of the sysinternals suite.  You can find the whole suite at the sysinternals web site.  The virtual desktop suite is called desktops.exe.  There is no installer for these apps.  Just drop the folder somewhere and create shortcuts to the apps that you want to use.

Another one that I’m trying now is called Dexpot .  It’s much more sophisticated with all kinds of options that you’ll probably never use.  One useful feature is that you can move or copy windows from one desktop to the next.  The last such app I’ll mention is VirtuaWin .  It has quite a few features too.

Update:  I’ve settled on VirtuaWin.  It has everything that I need and is simple to use and configure.  There are a number of modules available that extend its features.

Added Google Analytics

I installed a plugin called “Google Analytics” which embeds google analytics java script code in all pages on this site. Google Analytics tracks web traffic and allows you to view reports on site usage. There are many, many WordPress plugins for Google Analytics. The one I used had a four star rating and just happened to be called “Google Analytics.”

I discovered that WordPress was set to not allow search engines.  I changed the setting to “I would like my blog to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers.”

Hopefully, by November, this will be my next computer system!
